Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs recently said that the next iMac would be “off the charts.” Today, a new patent reveals that Apple may be working on a multi-touch mouse.

The multi-touch technology has proven to be very successful with the iPhone and Apple plans to extend that intuitive interface to its Apple Mouse.

“You can pinch and tickle your mouse” Hrmph! notes. Gestures can also be used to invoke and manipulate virtual control interfaces, such as volume knobs, switches, sliders, handles, knobs, doors, and other widgets that may be created to facilitate human interaction with the computing system.

They suggest that the mouse could even glow red when new mail is received, giving the user interface a more interactive feel.

If these ideas are incorporated into a new iMac design, they would set the machine far apart from today’s offerings and could truly make the new machine “off the charts.”
