The newest Apple patent has just surfaced today.

Hrmpf reports that this patent is intended to allow iPhone (or a tablet) to be docked in a landscape or portrait orientation, or in some cases in any orientation.

The article goes on to describe techniques on how to include physical connectors to permit landscape and portrait charging and data transfer. However, a remarkable technique is referred to: inductive docking, where the device would be charged ‘wirelessly’.

Inductive charging does not need physical contact, it only requires the devices to be in close proximity.
